#11341: YOU ARE THERE
1964-06-20, CBS, 28 min.
Walter Cronkite , Jane Seymour , Ned Calmer , Beatrice Straight , Harry Marble

October 1st, 1953-October 13th, 1957. September 11th, 1971-September 2nd, 1972. (CBS)

Tonight's episode: Beatrice Straight stars in "The Crisis Of Anne Boleyn." May 16th, 1536. Henry V111 has lost interest in Anne and wants a clear course for his romance with Jane Seymour. He offers Anne a chance to save her life if she admits she has been unfaithful, and leaves England with their daughter, Elizabeth. But Anne wants her child to be heir to the throne.

An unusual Public Affairs series, You Are There began in 1947 as a radio show (it was originally titled CBS was There). Each week a well-known historical event was recreated, and the leading figures in each drama were interviewed by CBS news correspondents (the correspondents were always in modern-day dress, regardless of the setting of the story). The television version ran from 1953-1957 on Sunday afternoons, and was revived in 1971 as a Saturday-afternoon show, aimed principally at children. Walter Cronkite was the chief correspondent on both TV versions. Paul Newman guest-starred on one program as Nathan Hale (30 August 1953) and the 1971 premiere " The Mystery of Amelia Earhart" featured Geraldine Brooks and Richard Dreyfuss.

#19473A: FDR: "STRIFE!"
1965-03-05, ABC, 27 min.
Charlton Heston , Franklin D. Roosevelt , Eleanor Roosevelt , Arthur Kennedy , Robert F. Wagner , James Carey

In 1933, conflict exploded between labor and management as unions sought the right to bargain collectively under a vague section of President Roosevelt's National Industrial Recovery Act. Tonight's program, written by Quentin Reynolds, reviews the violent labor-management relations of the thirties.
The times are bitter for working man and employer alike. In Georgia, prison camps are set up for strikers, San Francisco and Minneapolis are virtually paralyzed by strikes; soldiers are sent to restore order in the coal fields of West Virginia; FDR is called " a traitor to his class" and the labor movement splits into two camps: AFL and CIO. Early in 1935, Senator Robert Wagner, Democrat from New York, introduces the National Labor Relations Act, designed to enforce the rights of labor. A manufacturers association claims the NLRA "will out-Stalin Stalin," while the Dailey Worker asserts "it will be a weapon to destroy the power of the workers."
Among those interviewed: Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Mayor Robert F. Wagner of New York City and labor leader James Carey. Narrated by Arthur Kennedy. Charlton Heston reads from FDR's writings.

1966-02-15, ABC, 60 min.
Bob Young , Tex Ritter , Duke Ellington , Gene Krupa , Tony Bennett , Marty Robbins , Dave Clark Five , Richard Rodgers , Billy Taylor , Temptations , George Simon , Fred Ramsey, Jr.

This is a journey back to the roots of our popular music, exploring some of the diverse sources that have contributed to the type of song now dominating the music industry.
To show something of the past, producer Stephen Fleischman's cameras visit Preservation Hall in New Orleans, where some "elder statesmen" still come to play the kind of jazz performed at the turn of the century. Films of singers at the Morning Star Baptist Church and of the Supremes in a recording session illustrate the relationship between the two groups; responsive singing and heavenly accented rhythms. We also see The Grand Ole Opry of Nashville, Tennessee, the most famous showcase for Country and Western music, which originated with America's early Scottish, English, and Irish immigrants.
Among other musicians interviewed or performing...Rock N' Roll: The Temptations, The Dave Clark Five, Country and Western: Marty Robbins, Tex Ritter, Jazz: Duke Ellington, Gene Krupa, Billy Taylor, Musical Comedy: Richard Rodgers, Pop: Tony Bennett.

#990: SAGA OF WESTERN MAN: BEETHOVEN: ORDEAL AND TRIUMPH
1966-03-23, WABC, 50 min.
Ludwig Van Beethoven , David McCallum , John H. Secondari

This program explores Ludwig Van Beethoven's role as an emancipator whose innovations and experiments freed music from the rigid formalism of the 18th century. David McCallum is heard as the voice of Beethoven. Script and narration by John H. Secondari.

One in this series of programs which examine significant events in the history of western civilization using dramatic re-creation. This episode examines the life of German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and pianist Claude Frant are featured. As the program opens, the narrator describes the social climate of Vienna and surrounding European countries at the end of the eighteenth century. A discussion follows concerning BeethovenÕs family and his musical education in Bonn.

With his father's guidance, Beethoven performed at age seven, composed his first fugue when he was thirteen, and worked as a court musician by the age of fourteen. However, since the work of a court musician did not allow Beethoven to have adequate creative freedom, Beethoven moved to Vienna (the cultural mecca at that time) after his mother's death, in order to compose his own music. After a short time, he began to gain recognition in aristocratic society, with pieces such as his Opus 1 trios. A discussion follows regarding Beethoven's struggles as a composer, the inspiration he found in nature, as well as his discomfort among the aristocracy.

During Beethoven's period of success he was able to subsist using his commissions. An excerpt of his composition for the Prometheus Ballet is used as an example of his commissioned work, and then there is a discussion about Beethoven's gradual deafness and the music that he composed in spite of or possibly because of his deafness. The program concludes with quotations from Beethoven concerning the connection between art and the human spirit. Other compositions featured in the program include the following: Pathetique Sonata, op.13; Moonlight Sonata, op.15; Piano Concerto no.1; and Symphony no.1,op. 21.

1967-03-07, CBS, 59 min.
Mike Wallace , Dean Rusk , Gore Vidal , Warren Atkins , Hal Cole , James Fisk , Albert Goldman , Lars Larsen

October 27, 1959 - November 4, 1979.
1980 - Irregular broadcasts thru the 1990's.

An in-depth exploration of Homosexuality. It is a subject that explores the questions, is it a physical or mental illness as understood at that time. Is it a moral crime, or just another product of biological and/or psychological circumstance, such as eye color or a fear of heights?

In 1967 there are millions of homosexuals in the United States and today many are demanding the right to fulfill their needs within the law.

In interviews, correspondent Mike Wallace talks with homosexual men, who remain anonymous, and members of the Mattachine Society whose chief aim is the reform of laws against homosexuals.

Those analyzing aspects of homosexuality include sociologists, psychologists, a federal judge, social critic Albert Goldman, and playwright Gore Vidal, who discusses homosexuality in the arts.

Secretary of State Dean Rusk defends the State Department's policy against hiring homosexuals' which is US policy. Others to give their personal agenda and experiences living as a homosexual include a 19-year-old offender in a public park: homosexual members of clubs and bars, and a metropolitan area frequented by homosexual prostitutes.

Also reported is a Boise, Idaho incident where a homosexual "scare" sparked a near witch-hunt in the mid 1950's.

NOTE:
CBS Reports: The Homosexuals, which aired in 1967, was the first time homosexuality was presented on a national network broadcast. "The Homosexuals" was praised for debunking negative stereotypes, but also condemned for generalizations and promoting other stereotypes. LGBT activist Wayne Beset called "The Homosexuals" "the single most destructive hour of antigay propaganda in our nation's history.

NOTE:
This CBS REPORTS:THE HOMOSEXUALS was the fourth and final broadcast Mike Wallace would report during the entire run of this iconic CBS Television probing and investigating series.
