Dr. Joyce Brothers, a former academic psychologist who, long before Drs. Ruth, Phil and Laura, was counseling millions over the airwaves.

Dr. Joyce Brothers, as she was always known professionally — a full-name hallmark of the more formal times in which she began her career — was widely described as the mother of mass-media psychology and homiletic guidance she administered for decades via radio and television.

Historically, she was a bridge between advice columnists like Dear Abby and Ann Landers, who got their start in the mid-1950s, and the self-help advocates of the 1970s and afterward.

Throughout the 1960s, and long beyond, one could scarcely turn on the television or open a newspaper without encountering her. She was the host of her own nationally syndicated TV shows, starting in the late 1950s with “The Dr. Joyce Brothers Show” and over the years including “Ask Dr. Brothers,” “Consult Dr. Brothers” and “Living Easy With Dr. Joyce Brothers.”

Sharp tongued Henry Morgan, who never was able to keep a television series on the air for more that a brief period of time, lasted only nine months with three different time slot entries for this early late night talk/variety show. 

Syndicated and broadcast in New York on WNTA Channel 13 this series had a 90 minute format (10pm-Midnight), and two additional time change formats all in 1959. 

Morgan's show was revised from a 90 minute format to a one hour broadcast time slot and continued for another three months and then again revised to a half hour for another two months before being cancelled altogether.

Orson Bean is a guest who answers Live phone calls to the studio; a rare phenomenon for its time even preceding Les Crane who did the same during his late night entry into television on WABC in 1963, four years later.

These originally recorded off the air pristine sound direct line 1/4" reel to reel audio tracks, recorded at the time of the original broadcasts, represent the only broadcast record of a "lost" visual telecast. ATA is the largest single repository (one collection), in the United Sates of Jack Paar Tonight Shows recordings. The combined archives of The Library of Congress, Paley Center for Media, and UCLA Film & Television retain a composite total of 13 hours of representative JACK PAAR TONIGHT SHOW broadcasts excerpts, all KINESCOPES (sound quality inferior to originally direct line 1/4" reel to reel home recordings at the time of the broadcast). No COMPLETE intact visual and audio broadcasts survive. There are no extant video taped surviving RECORDINGS of the JACK PAAR TONIGHT SHOW...not even an excerpt.

Jack states that NBC brought 50 people to Nassau to do this show which is seen by 30 million people…one hour forty five minutes…the most unrehearsed show which is part of the charm.

Jack introduces a young boy from Cuba whom he has known since 1943, Jose Melis who performs a number with the new Katzenjammers Steel Band.  Paar introduces Sir Rainier and 
his wife Lady Arthur.  Jack states that this first show from Bermuda is the largest TV show ever broadcast in Nassau. $55,000 for two tape machines, $35,000 each for five TV cameras…crew working four 
days and four nights and all a go until  a “hum” in the audio was detected and it took six hour to determine that someone dropped a dime in one to the TV cameras. Jack and Hugh converse. 
Jack states this is his sixth trip to the Bahamas. Beautiful here, and no income tax. No real estate tax.
Paar introduces guest Hermione Gingold. Jack says he is emotional even when he sees children drawing pictures; he introduces Richie Delamore who sings, “Island in the Sky.”

Note: This was the night of the dispute between Jack Paar and Mickey Rooney. It was based on Rooney being intoxicated when he came on the program and made wisecracks at Paar. Paar reciprocated by asking Rooney to leave.    From Hollywood. In his monologue Jack Paar reiterates what occurred two nights ago between himself and Mickey Rooney who was intoxicated when he came on the program. Rooney made cracks about Paar, and Paar reciprocated by asking him to leave.

NOTE:
So, why did Mickey show up drunk on Jack Paar’s The Tonight Show? Rooney was still lit from staying up to celebrate his wedding anniversary the night before when he arrived for the broadcast. When asked what Ava Gardner was really like, a belligerent Rooney replied, “Well, Mr. Paar, may I say this, she is more woman than you will ever know.” After a few thick-tongued utterances from his guest, Paar observed, “I think you’re loaded.”

Rooney then proceeded to express disdain over the previous night’s show. “Do you enjoy it tonight?” Paar asked. “Not necessarily,” Rooney grumbled. Before Paar could finish asking “Would you care to leave?” Mickey had up and walked out. The next day Rooney responded to the headlines with, “A man would have to be drunk to appear on that show. Paar is the dregs of television.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Jack Paar accepted Mickey Rooney's invitation to meet with him in his hotel room. Paar relates the details of this meeting in his monologue.


Guest Sterling Hayden (first time on a television interview broadcast) comments on sailing away in June 1959 with his four children (Christian, Dana, Gretchen and Matthew), 7, 9, 10 & 11 years of age, and thirteen adults, from San Francisco Bay to Tahiti, in the South Pacific, defying a court order, leaving "materialism," and Hollywood behind. This seven minute segment contains almost half of this surviving "lost" TV broadcast. 

Haunted by the friends he’d betrayed, fed up with the subpar movies he was making (cast in westerns, he “couldn’t ride worth a goddamn” and was “the slowest draw west of the Rhine”), flat broke and waging a custody battle with his ex-wife, Hayden escaped into the arms of his first love. In defiance of a court order, he loaded up his four children on a schooner called WANDERER and set sail for the South Seas. Hayden describes his adventure with Paar. 

At the top of the show, a brief interview by Paar with child actress Evelyn Rudie who describes the following moment in her life. 

In 1959, at age 9, I disappeared from my Los Angeles home and was feared kidnapped. But it turned out I had booked a flight to Washington, D.C., on my own, and boarded the airplane unaccompanied. When I was taken off the plane at Baltimore, I told the authorities that I wanted to visit First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, whom I had met previously, at the White House. I wanted to ask her if she could  help me get a part in a TV series.

It would pre-empt the regularly scheduled program "Romance of Life." The astonishing flexibility of the number three network, ABC, in 1960 is observed. Joe Franklin, an important daytime personality, is allowed to accommodate his sponsor Canada Dry and extends the program for their live television testimonials. Franklin also plugs his other sponsors My-T-Fine desert and does a complete commercial for Vermont Maid Syrup.

Jack Paar returns to the TONIGHT SHOW after his mid-February walk-out and subsequent vacation in Hong Kong. 

 Hugh Downs states that "tonight's show will go down in broadcast history." During the opening 11:15 to 11:30pm segment Downs states that in fairness to the country Jack will appear when the show is seen by the entire country, Nationally by all of the affiliate stations, at 11:30pm.
 
Following a Blue Cheer laundry detergent commercial, Hugh Downs announces the 11:30pm opening of the Jack Paar Tonight Show and counts down, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and introduces Jack Paar. Jack's first words are, "As I was saying before I was interrupted." Paar praises Hugh Downs for his loyalty. He then has some nasty words to say about columnist Walter Winchell who he calls "that silly old man." 

Paar also takes up where he left off, criticizing Dorothy Kilgallen calling her someone who reminds him of a puppet. "When she speaks she never seems to move her lips."

Jack tells his audience that he believes the Hearst press is rigged, as per example, his good friend Jim Bishop, columnist for the Hearst Press, had his column about Paar, today, suppressed.  

Paar reminisces about his "water closet" joke that created great controversy that led Jack to walk off the air. He tells of his trip to Japan...many stories and anecdotes. 

NOTE: This television audio air check segment of Jack Paar returning to the Tonight Show is not known to exist in any VIDEO format other than a minute of his appearance at the beginning of his entrance. What does exist is this rare historic retrospective audio air check reveal of Jack Paar returning to the Tonight Show when his late night show was the most controversial and unpredictable program on television.  
                                                                                                                                                                                    

Barry Gray was an American radio personality, often referred to as "the father of talk radio." His late-night New York City radio talk show was carried by WOR radio and then later by WMCA.

Barry Gray returned to WMCA in 1950, and stayed there for 39 years, refining the talk show format still utilized today. During the 1960s, he was in the odd position of having an 11 p.m.-1 a.m. late night talk show on a station otherwise dominated by Top 40 music and the youth-targeted "Good Guys" disc jockey campaign. But for teenagers who kept their radios on into the night, Gray's show was a window into the high-brow New York culture of the 1940s and 1950s.

   Jack Paar speaks vehemently about Ed Sullivan continuously. He explains why Ed Sullivan refused to appear on The Tonight Show. Jack said that Ed wanted to use a teleprompter and to read a prepared statement. Jack said "any idiot can read a teleprompter" and continued to address other grievances about Sullivan including feuds with Joey Bishop who Paar considers as a protege. He ends his address calling Ed Sullivan a liar. 

NOTE: Highlights of this  broadcast unprecedented monologue is the only example of a JACK PAAR TONIGHT SHOW where Jack was a guest on his own show. Hugh Downs opens the 11:15pm opening segment as substitute host, and conducts the show for the first 15 minutes. Jack Paar is introduced at 11:30pm. He then speaks about Ed Sullivan continuously for 51 minutes, only interrupted for commercials. At 12:21am Jack finally finishes his emotional tirade, calling Ed Sullivan a liar!    
So angry was Paar that he left the show after his monologue, leaving Hugh Downs to finish the show.

It was a local New York City-based program.

When Collingwood took over as host about half of the series' programs originated from foreign locations and were pre-recorded on videotape. While many of the Murrow segments exist on kinescope, and can be accessed, most of the Collingwood segments are not available.            

H.V. Kaltenborn discusses the National Democratic Convention. He predicts that Richard Nixon will defeat John F. Kennedy for President of the United States. Joey Bishop discusses the candidates and also mentions that in September 1960 The Tonight Show will be telecast in color.

Familiar faces who appeared many times with Jack included Dody Goodman, Betty Johnson, Elsa Maxwell, Alexander King, Genevieve, Jack Douglas; and wife Reiko, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Hans Conried, Peggy Cass, Cliff (Charley Weaver) Arquette, and Johnathan Winters. Hugh Downs substituted for Jack Paar 79 times, more than any other substitute host there were 20 different performers over the period of the series run. Joey Bishop substituted for Paar 31 times. Arlene Francis, 30 times, Jonathan Winters, 26 times, Orson Bean, 21 times and Johnny Carson 15 times. All together there were 243 broadcasts which had substitute hosts filling in for Paar during Jack Paar's TONIGHT SHOW tenure. The title of the late night broadcast changed to THE JACK PAAR SHOW which took effect on February 3, 1958. The first video-taped broadcast aired on January 5, 1959. "Best of Paar " Re-runs began on July 10,1959. The first color broadcast aired on September 19, 1960.                                                                                               

Barry Gray was an American radio personality, often referred to as "the father of talk radio." His late-night New York City radio talk show was carried by WOR radio and then later by WMCA. 

Barry Gray returned to WMCA in 1950, and stayed there for 39 years, refining the talk show format still utilized today. During the 1960s, he was in the odd position of having an 11 p.m.-1 a.m. late night talk show on a station otherwise dominated by Top 40 music and the youth-targeted "Good Guys" disc jockey campaign. But for teenagers who kept their radios on into the night, Gray's show was a window into the high-brow New York culture of the 1940s and 1950s.

Jimmy Durante reminisces about his beginnings in show business, first club he ever worked at, his relationships with Lou Clayton, and the early years and personal anecdotes about fighting for two hours with a kid who made fun of his nose.
 
Durante admits he will marry again this year. Introduction of his best buddies Eddie Jackson, Jules Buffano, Hal Roth, and new comer Sonny King who acquired this recording from Phil Gries which led to his introduction of his best friend Joey Bishop.

At the start of the broadcast Jimmy gives great respect to Errol Flynn who wrote lovingly of Durante in his autobiography, "My Wicked Wicked Ways."
