Muhammad Ali guests in his first public appearance since his Championship boxing loss to Joe Frazier March 8th. He is interviewed by Johnny Carson in an 18 minute segment. Before Carson introduces him he mentions that Ali was suppose to appear on The Tonight Show prior to the fight but cancelled out at the last minute angering Johnny who stated that Ali will no longer be invited to appear on the show in the future. 
Muhammad explains the circumstances of the cancellation which appeases Carson. 

Topics covered...Ali stating that after the Frazier fight it was the first time he suffered facial swelling in a boxing match. Gives Joe Frazier great credit for having a powerful left hook. Ali believes he won at least 10 rounds. Rematch is of interest. Ali mentions that he has been doing a lot of college dates, personal appearances. He accepts the fact that Joe Frazier is now the champ..."till the next fight."
Ali debunks  the rumor that he was drugged before the fight. Muhammad confirms that in his boxing career he has never been offered a bribe to throw a fight. He was ranked the ninth greatest talk show host of all time by Talkers Magazine. He joined WOR radio in 1962 after a stint at 1010 WINS radio in New York City. When Farber left WOR radio he joined WMCA radio in New York City for an afternoon drive time show that lasted until 1989 when WMCA changed its format to a Christian radio station.

From August 18th, 1969- February 11th, 1972 Merv Griffin appeared in a late-night talk show format on CBS-TV. It's believed that all of his CBS talk shows were bulk-erased by the network. In 1972, Griffin returned to the syndication market where he remained until 1986.

On this program, Merv's guests are Sammy Davis Jr. and Desi Arnaz Jr. The program is interrupted by a CBS news bulletin regarding the latest in a series of plane hijackings.

June 7th, 1971: J.I. Rodale's Onstage Death 

As noted in Cavett's autobiography, (pg321-323) on June 7th, 1971, publisher J.I. Rodale, an advocate of organic farming, died of a heart attack during taping. Cavett was speaking with journalist Pete Hamill when Rodale began to make a snoring noise. Cavett's reaction to this is contested-he claims that both he and Hamill realized immediately that something was wrong, while other accounts have him addressing the unconscious man "Are we boring you, Mr. Rodale?" The audience did not realize anything was seriously wrong until Cavett asked (avoiding the cliche) "Is there a doctor in the audience?"      

The program was never aired and a rerun aired in its place. The following night, June 8th, 1971 (George Burns is a guest) Cavett describes his reaction at length as to what happened during last night's taping regarding J.I. Rodale's death and discusses the incident.

One of PBS's most popular public affairs programs. The Advocates was mostly a series of debates, usually presented live. Former Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis served as moderator in its first years. Early in 1978 the show returned with Marilyn Berger as moderator.

David  Steinberg is guest  host standing in for Dick Cavett.

We hear Steinberg's entire monologue. Comedian Henny Youngman does a stand-up routine, and relates about his early years in show business. He idolized Milton Berle. 

George Plimpton discusses his research interviewing comedians including Woody Allen with his own objective to attempt stand-up comedy on his own. He demonstrates his "act" to the audience.  He states the most inventive and brilliant comedian of all is Jonathan Winters. 

The segment with Bill Russell runs 15 minutes.
Russell is introduced by Steinberg. He is persuaded to take a raw shack test (first thing that comes to his mind) by Steinberg. Bill describes his feelings about Wilt Chamberlin and states why he was so great (in a comedic conclusion Bill mentions that Wilt was the second best  player, ever). Russell talks about his initiative to be the first person to grow a beard as a player and how he got his reputation. Bill Russell and David Steinberg play one on one...Russell states his favorite shot a "dunk shot."

In a brief appearance, Dr. Theodore Rubin discusses his book, "Forever Thin." He states the myths about fat people, and defines "obese psychology."

Newsmakers were interviewed by journalists on this public affairs program, ABC's counterpart of CBS's "Face The Nation" and NBC's "Meet The Press." In its earliest weeks, the series was entitled "ABC Press Conference."

Topic: "Branding Vietnam a Bad War."
Moderator: Howard K. Smith with guest Col. David Hackworth. 

 On June 27, 1971, the ABC network aired an edition of its Issues and Answers news program. Viewers listened with shock and concern as one of the most highly decorated soldiers of the post-World War II era, Col. David Hackworth, in full dress uniform, told them of a long line of mistakes, failures and lies associated with the Vietnam War.

He summed it up this way. “I have seen the American nation spend so much of its wonderful, great young men in this country. I have seen our national wealth being drained away. I see the nation being split apart and almost split asunder because of this war, and I am wondering to what end to is all going to lead to.”  The interview had been filmed in South Vietnam two months earlier. Before the interview took place, Col. Hackworth, or “Hack” as he liked to be called, was finishing up his third and final tour in Vietnam and was almost certain to be promoted to brigadier general. 

After the interview aired, Hack’s illustrious, decades-long military career in the army was brought to an end.

The opening of the show, Doc Severinson, substituting for Ed McMahon, who is on vacation, introduces the guests for this evening show. Johnny returning from vacation does a nine minute monologue. 

While Johnny and Doc are conversing at the desk, Ed Sullivan appears, surprising Johnny.

Three weeks after the cancellation of The Ed Sullivan Show, on the air for 23 years, Ed discusses how he will miss the show.  He states that he will be doing eight specials for CBS. Sullivan talks about his innate abilities to spot talent and that ability was what made the Ed Sullivan Show successful. Johnny asks Sullivan about new trends in TV. Sullivan praises Carson for his exceptional prowess to be funny every night.

Armstrong performs "Hello Dolly!," "Moon River," "Blueberry Hill" (with Bing Crosby), "I Surrender Dear," "Wonderful World," "Mood Indigo," "Sleepy Time Down South,"  "That's My Desire," and "Boy From New Orleans."

Louis Armstrong and David Frost discuss many topics...Armstrong's youth, first introduction to music (we hear a brief excerpt of Louis" first record), and his philosophy on women, wives, friendships, work and appreciation of living life with passion. 

In a contemporary segment, David Frost's Musical Director, Billy Taylor, states what he feels were unique characteristics about Louis Armstrong as an artist.
