Dick Cavett entered late night television in 1969. During the summer of 1969 he hosted a thrice-weekly prime-time series on ABC, and later that year he succeeded Joey Bishop as host of the network's late-night talk show. Cavett brought with him the announcer and bandleader who had worked with him on his earlier shows - Fred Foy, who was for decades the announcer of The Lone Ranger on radio and television, and drummer Bobby Rosengarten. This new format was another attempt by ABC to compete against NBC's highly successful Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. Originally broadcast five nights a week. However, by January of 1973, the show was seen only one week a month as Cavett's ratings failed to dent Carson's. Jack Paar's return to late night television after an eleven year absence was similarly seen only one week a month under the new ABC series moniker, ABC's WIDE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT. On January 1st, 1975, The Dick Cavett Show disappeared from the network all together.

July 7, 1969-July 14, 1972 (SYNDICATED). During the three-year run of his American talk show, David Frost taped the show (approximately 750 programs) each week, Monday through Thursdays. The series was syndicated by Westinghouse.  

Thiry three year old Bill Cosby is the solo guest and does most of the talking about his life, and philosophy of comedy. Topics include...his favorite comedians in film, television and stand-up. His admiration is expressed for Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny, Jerry Lewis, Willie Best, and especially Jonathan Winters. Cosby reflection the perception of children including his five year old daughter Erica. Bill states that he waited long and hard to finally have a son, his third child.
Bill remembers his years at Temple University at a time when he wanted to become a teacher. But  overshadowing such ambition was his love for stand up comedy, listening incessantly to records by comics and remembering what he felt was funny. He parodied routines by Lenny Bruce and Bob Newhart, Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. 
Cosby reflects on working his first jobs in dinky bars and doing a routine about an 80 year old infirmed man who insisted on rolling his own cigarettes. He recalls working in Greenwich Village at the Gaslight for $100 a week.   
Bill discusses what his motivation was creating his famous routine of Noah and the Ark. 
We are introduces to a clip from a Bill Cosby Show to be aired. Noted is Bill's love of sports in his life from the time he was a youngster, growing up poor and having no Christmas tree, his dislike for reading books, never doing homework, and living on welfare.   

Bill taks to David Frost about his own children and the trials raising them with many humorous "father" anecdotes revealed.  
Also remembered are his extended family and confrontations he had with his mother and father.

Another clip is shown from a Bill Cosby Show, a routine about quitting smoking with Herb Edelman. A  Youngster brought to the show, Brian Vernell, does the "Chicken Heart"  routine verbatim  right from a Bill Cosby comedy album.   

Frost is shocked to hear that Bill Cosby is planning to retire from show business, leaving his series after two seasons. Cosby states that he and his wife Camille plan to move to Massachusetts  where he will be enrolling in the University of Massachusetts. He would love to work with children as a teacher...his way.

August 18, 1969-February 11, 1972.  The first of a two-part salute to the big band era. CBS signed Merv Griffin to a ninety-minute late night talk show in 1969. On hand were announcer Arthur Treacher and the Mort Lindsay Orchestra, both of whom had been with Griffin on his Westinghouse show. In September 1970 the show moved from New York to Los Angeles but to no avail, playing second best to "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Most of these shows were erased by CBS and did not survive.

August 18, 1969-February 11, 1972. The second of a two-part salute to the big band era. CBS signed Merv Griffin to a ninety-minute late night talk show in 1969. On hand were announcer Arthur Treacher and the Mort Lindsay Orchestra, both of whom had been with Griffin on his Westinghouse show. In September 1970 the show moved from New York to Los Angeles but to no avail, playing second best to "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Most of these shows were erased by CBS and did not survive.

The first 55 minutes of this broadcast is archived. It includes  opening introductions by Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson's 7 minute monologue, most of which contains reactions to this days Los Angeles earthquake, which occurred at 6:02am (6.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale)...the worst earthquake in LA in 38 years. 

Monologue excerpts include Johnny stating, "God is dead rally is scheduled for tonight," "This is our last show from California," "The severity of this quake was the equivalent of seven Mexican dinners," "The quake didn't rattle Ed at all for it was the first time he was in sync with his room after a few nightcaps." Other monologue mentions include how the earthquake increased sex satisfaction at Senior Citizen homes, chickens laying nothing but scrambled eggs today, and observing that our astronauts landed today back to earth with nearly a mention on the news due to the earthquake. 

Johnny Carson interviews a woman who is the first to wear "hot pants."

THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, aired on NBC Television from October 1, 1962 to May 22, 1992. Approximately, 4,531 episodes were broadcast according to reference sources.
This research report attempts to detail, specifically, those surviving complete and excerpt episodes which currently exist, as archived by THE CARSON ENTERTAINMENT GROUP, representing the first ten years of surviving programming as notated on its on-line inventory site… primarily representing broadcasts which aired from New York City, from Oct. 1, 1962 until May 1, 1972, at which time the show was aired from Burbank, California for the duration of its 30 year run.

During this first ten year broadcast time period only 276 individual shows survive (represented by 243 excerpts and only 33 complete shows, of which only 12 of these COMPLETE broadcasts reflect and represent the 1960’s).  The majority of all additional TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON broadcasts, televised during this first ten year period, have been sadly  erased, destroyed, lost, misplaced, during an era when archiving television was not a visionary.

                                                                    
The average excerpt time length representing each of the surviving 243 episodes equals approximately 13 minutes of extant programming. Excerpts range mostly from 5 minutes to 20 minutes in length. It is unfortunate that so much original programming representing the first TEN YEARS of broadcasting related to THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON was not saved by NBC network personnel who failed to realize the value and historic significance of these telecasts. 

Representing this ten year time period are 7,130 minutes of broadcast time which approximates a total of only 119 surviving hours. One could view ALL surviving material in less than five days!

The breakdown representing complete shows are as follows:

There exists NO complete one hour & 45 minute broadcasts (11:15pm-1:00am)-October 1, 1962 – December 30, 1966. 
 
Only three complete broadcasts, December 31, 1963, Oct. 3, 1965, with substitute host Joey Bishop, & December 31, 1965, sans the first 15 minute local lead in, survive, spanning the time period October 1, 1962 thru June 18, 1968.

 NO 11:15pm to 11:30pm segments survive representing Johnny Carson’s initial lead in monologue telecast to all local affiliates, nor those first 15 minute segments representing Ed McMahon and Skitch Henderson, who relieved Johnny Carson of that assignment, beginning February 19, 1965. 
 
 At 11:15 pm local stations had the option to broadcast the TS or present local programming (usually expanded news).  When Carson opted not to come on until the full network went on line at the 11:30pm time McMahon and Henderson did what in essence was a 15 minute warm-up, lead-in to Johnny Carson’s entrance at 11:30pm.

A total of 5 complete episodes survive from 1968…
4 complete episodes from 1969…1 complete episode from 1970…4 complete episodes from 1971 and 15 complete episodes from 1972 representing the time period, February 18  to  September 29, finalizing the first ten years of broadcasts.

When Johnny Carson moved his Tonight Show to Burbank (May 1, 1972) archiving THE TONIGHT SHOW became more of a focus and dictum by Johnny and production staff, as is evidenced in 1972 when scores of complete shows were saved. By 1973 and most decidedly from 1974 through Carson’s final show, May 22, 1992…almost all TONIGHT SHOW STARRING                                                                  JOHNNY CARSON broadcasts were saved and archived and not indiscriminately erased to economize, taping over previously recorded programs which was a common practice.

The earliest COLOR episode archived in the CARSON ENTERTAINMENT GROUP collection is from August 18, 1964. There are four color episodes archived from 1965…two from 1966…two from 1967 (one of the two excerpts, 12/8/67, in color, has NO AUDIO)…five from 1968…eleven from 1969, at which time MOST programming SAVED were saved as color 2” Quads or 16mm color kinescopes . The LAST saved episode in Black & White is dated in the CEG online index as September 13, 1971 (13 minute excerpt with Buddy Hackett). 

With few exceptions, all air dates as notated by the CARSON ENTERTAINMENT GROUP website are egregiously inaccurate, as notated here based on 2010 information. Some  blatant  errors are obvious. Judy Garland is listed as a guest in an entry dated October 12, 1969. Garland passed away June 22, 1969. There are hundreds of other inaccurate air dates listed (a correct air date is the exception) which need to be researched and corrected for it undermines the scholarly, arduous and prestigious accomplishment of such a praiseworthy peerless research source.  Reference resources available to accurately and definitively do such corrections exist as evidenced in my own reference library which include Tonight Show NBC INDEX CARD FILES, ROSS REPORTS TELEVISION INDEX, and NY METROPOLITAN TV GUIDES. 

Also, inaccurately listed, are air dates which contain not one but a multitude of excerpts each representing a multitude of different programs, combined together…giving the impression that all segments pertain to one show when in essence we are scrutinizing a compilation of programs, representing a dozen shows. 
Those brief excerpt segments which do survive from the first five years of Tonight Shows (1962-1967), seem, to this archivist/researcher, to be personal request copies by performers who made arrangement to have just their own segment  kinescoped, or video-taped. These truncated brief excerpts, which include, from time to time Carson at his desk, live commercial spots, station ID, segues, etc., read like a who’s who of “unknown/forgotten” entertainers. Most of these TS guests are lesser named celebrities or non-show business individuals.
 
The premiere show, October 1, 1962 survives as an AUDIO excerpt, as confirmed by Johnny Carson on a Tonight Show broadcast, September 14, 1987 which exists in this collection.
Other resources which maintain archive broadcasts representing the TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON include THE PALEY CENTER for MEDIA (2,489 items…99% of their                                                                         archive  represents post September 1972 programs). Pre-1972 saved broadcasts represent only five entries. THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS have only a few scant regular episodes with picture, but does have 416 ARMED FORCES RADIO (thirty minute excerpt recorded episodes) AUDIO ONLY discs which are one sided analog shellacs, 33 1/3 rpm; 12 inches). They represent the time period, January 1967 thru November 1968. 
The MUSEUM OF BROADCAST COMMUNICATIONS have listed on their website only five archived programs, all post 1981 with one 1969 exception (12/17/69-marriage of Tiny Tim). 

 UCLA FILM & TELEVISION ARCHIVE have no listings related to TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON broadcasts.

July 7, 1969-July 14, 1972 WNEW / WPIX (NY) TV (Syndicated)

During the three-year run of his American talk show, David Frost taped the show (approximately 750 programs) each week, Monday through Thursdays. The series was syndicated by Westinghouse.   

David Frost hosts one of his most memorable ensemble broadcasts in the series (a lost broadcast) with a rare tribute to a Broadway revival play, NO NO NANETTE. The complete cast visits Frost with individual anecdotes and remembrances including sole survivor, Irving Caesar, lyricist, of the original 1924 play. 

Ruby Keeler recalls her reaction as performer on opening night, and remembers working in films with co-star of the play, Patsy Kelly.
A clip of a movie Keeler appeared in, PAGE MISS GLORY, is played and discussed. Kelly, also discusses her past movie career and there are clips played and discussed. 

Irving Caesar discusses his long career and his relationship with Al Jolson, and George Gershwin. He recalls how he came to write 'TEA FOR TWO' with Gershwin when they were 18 and 19 years old. Caesar sings the entire song, "TEA FOR TWO." He recalls other hits including "I WAS SO YOUNG YOU WERE SO BEAUTIFUL," and "SWANEE RIVER" which was played for Al Jolson for the first time by George Gershwin at a party. Irving Caesar sings "SWANEE RIVER." 

A medley of songs are sung by Helen Gallagher including, "THIS CAN'T BE LOVE," "WHO STOLE MY HEART AWAY," and "THIS CAN'T BE LOVE." Helen discusses her role as the character Lucy in the play, 'NO NO NANETTE," and remembers her early career as a dancer. 

Bobby Van remembers first dancing when he was 15 years old, and later working with Busby Berkeley on a movie where he had to hop 4000 times in a number. Bobby Van tells how he derived the name Van from movie actor Van Johnson. He also, reminds David Frost of a forgettable movie he made in 1966, "THE NAVY VS THE NIGHT MONSTERS." 

Choreographer Donald Saddler discusses the origin to the "BEACH BALL" number and reteams with Helen Gallagher to do a dance. 

Jack Gliford sings "YOU ALWAYS HURT THE ONE YOU LOVE." He discusses his love of pantomime, and that he has incorporated  acting techniques by observing animals and their actions.
 
Susan Watson sings, "I'M OLD FASHIONED," the song she sang to get her part in 'NO NO NANETTE." 

Roger Rathburn, in his only guest TV appearance ever, sings "HAVE YOU MET MISS JONES?" 

The entire cast sings "I WANT TO BE HAPPY," as David Frost thanks the cast  and bids his live audience and TV audience, "Good Night."

David Frost's only guest this evening is singer Tony Bennett. 

Bennett sings numerous songs on the show backed by his own orchestra. They include, "Shadow of your Smile," "I Left My Hear in San Francisco," "Rags to Riches," "The Lady is in Love with You," "I'll Begin Again," "When You're Smiling," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Theme From Love Story," others.
Bennett recounts the thrill of recording the theme from "Love Story" in England with a 107 piece London Philharmonic orchestra behind him. 

David Frost and Tony Bennett talk about a myriad of topics, including Bennett's childhood, growing up in Astoria Queens, his siblings, the different Nationalities in his neighborhood, which strengthened him as a youth, the 69th division army band he was a member, his very first  girl friend, who encouraged him to become a singer, religion in his youth as an alter boy, and an anecdote related to the first singing "gig" he remembers performing as a 6 year old when he and his brother sang at the opening of the Tri-Borough Bridge with Mayor La Guardia in attendance. 

Tony Bennett takes questions from the audience. He remembers Pearl Bailey giving him his first professional opportunities. David Frost reads a poem that Bailey wrote to Bennett called "TAKE TIME."

Additional anecdotes include Bob Hope who changed his marquee name to Tony Bennett and took him on tour, how Tony first was introduced to his signature song, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," and coming in second to Rosemary Clooney competing on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts Radio Program. Frost and Bennett view a clip from the motion picture, "THE OSCAR," in which Tony does a very dramatic scene. Tony discusses his dramatic acting ambitions, his penchant for painting locations where he performs all around the world, and his admiration for the music by The Beatles. Tony sings a medley of Beatle tunes. 
When asked by Frost who his favorite singers are, Bennett mentions, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra.

Concluding the show Tony Bennett dedicates to David Frost and sings, "Who Can I Turn To?"

Guest Joan Baez discusses her objections to the United States penal system and why people become criminals. Audience participation becomes heated at times questioning Baez' points of view which deals with her philosophy of love to others regardless of their offenses. There are parallel's to the atrocities that the United States government are perpetrating on innocent people in Viet Nam. 

She also discusses her goals and ambitions.

Joan sings "Heaven Help Us All," and "Gabriel and Me."

Joan's 8 month old son, Garbriel joins the show. Frost attempts to communicated with Gabriel who is quite responsive.
