Five different issues are discussed each week in this half-hour program. A pre-selected sample of approximately 1000 homes are telephoned at the end of the program and asked their opinion on the issues. The results of the poll are discussed on the next week's program. Tonight's topics are: The Current state of movies, censorship, status of boxing (Should it be outlawed?), debate on movie stars with Faye Emerson and Sheila Graham (Are they overpaid?).

First-class mystery story developing in Washington with possible grave consequences, extreme secrecy and tension in the air possibly involving Berlin or Cuba, most speculation surrounds Cuba, emergency construction crews at Key West, servicemen pour into Florida, the Chinese Reds continue the assault on the Indians, they accuse Indians of aggression in the Himalayas, the Soviets avoid comment on this border war.           

President Kennedy to speak to the nation on the subject of highest national urgency, the US is in the midst of a crisis probably because of bases in Cuba, the US military is alerted, joint chiefs are alerted, hurried conferences of VIPs in Washington, tensions building up in the Capital, a question of US blockade against Cuba.                         

President Kennedy charges that the Soviet Union has erected offensive weapons in Cuba, ballistic missiles that are capable of striking the Southeast US, US will initiate a strict quarantine against military shipments to Cuba.              

The state department announces will stop, search, and even sink ships continuing offensive military weapons to Cuba, this will even include Russian ships, photos show missiles in Cuba aimed at the US, President Kennedy sends a note to Nikita Khrushchev.

July 18th, 1958- March 26th, 1972

Series of concerts originating from Carnegie Hall in New York City. Beginning in 1962, they were broadcast from Lincoln Center in New York City. Leonard Bernstein conducted fifty-three such televised performances until 1972.                                                                                                          

  The Edie Adams Show, an Emmy Award winning SPECIAL, telecast April 9, 1962, was a TAPED pilot for future Edie Adam's monthly TAPED SPECIALS...a total of eight half hour broadcasts were televised on ABC television, premiering October 23, 1962, followed by broadcasts on December 13, 1962, January 20, 1963, February 26, 1963, March 17, 1963, April 19, 1963, May 28, 1963, June 18, 1963 and called "Here's Edie."  

On this premiere broadcast, Peter Falk and Duke Ellington join Edie Adams who opens the show with a vocalise (singing without words) featuring members of the Ellington orchestra: "I've Got It Bad," "I'm Beginning to See the Light," and "Sophisticated Lady." In other segments, Edie sings "Lonely Town." Peter Falk, playin a sagacious cab driver, offers Edie his wide-ranging opinions: and, backed by Ellington's rendition of David Ros's "The Stripper," Edie does a burlesque of a reluctant burlesque queen. 
                  

The Soviet Union issues a serious warning to the US concerning the Cuban blockade will bare the responsibilities of the consequences says Cuban missiles are purely defensive, Cuban armed forces alerted, the OAS meets about US resolution for the dismantling of the Cuban missiles.                         

US ships are ready to intercept oncoming Soviet ships to Cuba, the OAS backs US action, the Soviets say the US action is a step toward nuclear war, Castro charges the US "act of war" Khrushchev believed to give "go-through" order on his ship, a war-time atmosphere in Washington, DC.                         

Highlights: late word- The US Navy hunts a large Russian ship carrying guided missiles to Cuba.             

Remarks by the Cuban representative assails and accuses the US of"provocative" attacks on Cuba, a talk by Valerian Zorin, a Soviet delegate also assails the US.                          

President Kennedy signs a formal declaration putting forth a blockade, confrontation soon by the US Navy with thirty-five Russian ships now on the way to Cuba, the Russians charge "provocation and piracy on the high seas."

October 2, 1961 - August 30, 1963

Harry Reasoner and Mary Fickett are hosts for this live half-hour weekday series which deals with a variety of subjects, including art, science, history, fashion, travel, medicine, education, marriage, and customs. Included is a daily news report by Reasoner. Many celebrities also drop by and discuss their past, present and future career with Fickett and Reasoner. 

Topics: The Soviets may avert a showdown they show a hesitancy at the UN, the Chinese Reds continue their advances.

At the United Nations, third UN Secretary General U-Thant appeals for peace, regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis. 

Fifth Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai Stevenson confronts Russian Ambassador Valerian Zorin on the placing of Russian missiles on the Island of Cuba. Stevenson says he will present evidence of Russia's wrongdoing. 

Topics: The US intercepts a Soviet ship and lets it pass on to Cuba with its oil cargo, UN negotiations underway with face-saving suggestions by Soviets and the US, anti-US demonstrations throughout the world including Harvard University, the Chinese Reds press further into India, a new report- a dozen Russian ships turn back.            

FIVE STAR NEWS with anchor Kevin Kennedy was a WPIX TV weekday 10 minute presentation telecast from 11:50am - Noon. 
The broadcast would open with catchy instrumental theme song with the following introduction:
"Good Morning. Kevin Kennedy with Five Star News."
 
Topics: John Steinbeck wins the Nobel prize for  literature. He is interviewed on location by John Tillman. Sixty year old Steinbeck describes his astonished reaction and feelings related to this prestigious award.  A report on the Cuban missile crisis, Cubans continue missile buildup on the island, Adlai Stevenson and Russian diplomat Valerian Zorin in a row at the UN Security Council today, a heated exchange, Stevenson shows aerial photos of Cuban missile sites.  The Carrier Enterprise leads a naval interception armada.

NOTE: It is interesting that in 1962 TV news broadcasting still injected into their news stories dramatic "canned" dramatic music to accompany a news segment as demonstrated by the story related to the Carrier Enterprise naval interception armada. 

NOTE: Anchor Kevin Kennedy would also do the news for WPIX weekdays at 7:00pm to 7:10pm preceding a fifteen newscast anchored by John Tillman (7:10-7:25pm).

Half-hour game show hosted by Bert Parks. Contestants would win money by supplying the missing words in lyrics sung to them. Bob Russell was the creator of the show. This is the last game show that Bert Parks would host.

Monty Hall was the executive producer of this daytime game show with Bill Leyden the MC. A panel of three celebrities tried to guess the identity of mystery guests from clues supplied by the host. Dennis James was a regular panelist on the show.

The US intercepts and inspects second Russian ship.             

President Kennedy responds to U-Thant's note, he will avoid a direct confrontation with Soviet ships if such ships avoid the interception area.             

A United States Army captain is sent to teach the fundamentals of democracy and industry to the resident of a small village in occupied Japan.              

The news, October 27th-29th, 1962

October 27th- Cuban Missile Crisis 
Cuban antiaircraft gunners open fire on low-level reconnaissance planes over San Cristobal site #1. 

October 28th, 1962- Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev announces that Soviet missiles would be dismantled and removed from Cuba.
In sports- Giants quarterback YA Tittle throws a then record seven touchdown passes against the Washington Redskins in a 49-34 Giant route at Yankee Stadium.

October 29th, 1962- The Cuban Missile Crisis between the United States and Russia ends peacefully as Russia dismantles and removes Soviet Missiles from Cuba.  

There is Jackie Gleason's opening monologue, a "Joe the Bartender" sketch about "Photos from the Past" with Frank Fontaine, who for the first time, out of his "Crazy Guggenheim" character, sings a song: "When Your Heart Has Turned To Silver" at the conclusion of the sketch. There is a 3 1/2 minute Harry Reasoner and Robert Pierpoint News bulletin interrupting the program and outlining President John F. Kennedy's plan for solving the current Cuban crisis. The Gleason Show continues with a Sue Ane Langdon "Granada" production number. A 60 second promo for the upcoming 1962 election night is heard at the end of the program.             

Khrushchev says President Kennedy took reasonable steps in avoiding an incident with Soviet ships, Khrushchev tells President Kennedy he will withdraw offensive weapons from Cuba if the US withdraws its rockets from Turkey, Khrushchev calls for US negotiations, the UN to visit Turkey and Cuba.                                      

Cuban crisis: President Kennedy sends a letter to Khrushchev stating that Soviets must remove offensive weapons from Cuba under US auspices, the US will then remove the naval blockade, 
confusion on diplomatic letter from Moscow to the US a possible diplomatic flip-flop, a cause for optimism is evident in the crisis.

September 5, 1949-June 7, 1954 (NBC); June 14, 1954-June 16, 1963 (ABC). This was the first broadcast of the season. "Voice of Firestone," which began on radio in 1928, was a Monday-night perennial for more than two decades before coming to television in 1949; for the next five years it was simulcast on NBC radio and television, until a dispute between the sponsor and the network over the Monday time slot led Firestone to shift the program to ABC. The half-hour musical series presented all kinds of music, but emphasized classical and semiclassical selections. Each week a guest celebrity was featured, and for many years the principal guests came from the Metropolitan Opera Company. The Firestone Orchestra was conducted by Howard Barlow, and the show was hosted by John Daly during its years on ABC; Hugh James was the announcer. "Voice of Firestone" was seen as a series of specials from 1959 until 1962; it returned as a weekly series in the fall of 1962 for a final season (September 30, 1962-June 16, 1963).
