Gardner specialized in profiling show business celebrities and other news makers, and he hosted a nightly ten-minute TV interview program in New York called Face to Face. His weekly Sunday-night show, Hy Gardner Calling!, also aired only in the New York area and consisted of interviews conducted by telephone, with the subject seemingly at home, but actually seated in one studio, while Gardner sat at his desk in another. The telephone hook-up was real, and there was no physical proximity between host and guest. The show premiered in 1954 ? on New York City’s NBC affiliate station WRCA-TV, Channel 4, and ran until 1965. Hy Gardner interviews comedian Henny Youngman.

October 1, 1962-May 22, 1992. FIRST ANNIVERSARY BROADCAST Johnny Carson, host of NBC's network late-night "Tonight Show" reigned for 30 unprecedented years...five times the combined tenure of Steve Allen, and Jack Paar. Carson was impervious to competition, including efforts to dethrone him by Les Crane, Joey Bishop, Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett, Jack Paar, Pat Sajak, Joan Rivers, and Arsenio Hall. Sadly, very few complete "Tonight Show" broadcasts survive during Johnny Carson's first ten years of broadcasting. Around 1965, through the early 1970's, oldest tapes were first erased systematically by orders from myopic NBC executives, to be recycled for purposes of saving money. Ironically, in many cases, these older master tapes were too brittle, and portended probable drop-outs for re-use after being erased. Subsequently blank after being erased, these older questionable master 2" Quad tapes were either sparingly used or never used again for recording new programming and eventually were discarded. Saving thousands of dollars at the time (wiping master tapes for potential re-use) resulted in losing millions of dollars by NBC in today's marketplace, and more importantly wiping thousands of historic TONIGHT SHOW broadcasts, which contain precious personal anecdotes from political, show business, and sports icons of the past. Guests Abbe Lane, Henny Youngman, and New York City Mayor Robert Wagner help Johnny celebrate his first anniversary as host of the Tonight Show. This broadcast opens with Ed McMahon announcing the guests on this show, the First Anniversary broadcast. Johnny Carson related to this special telecast night. Mayor of New York City Robert Wagner is introduced. Carson quips that during his own first two years living in NYC he thought newsman Gabe Pressman was the Mayor. Carson takes advantage of the moment asking Wagner if he can be instrumental in bringing back New York City's 11:15pm to 11:30pm segment which was replaced because of a newspaper strike by adding an additional 15 minute of local news after only 10 weeks of TTS broadcasting a full 105 minutes in NYC...on the air for the last time a full one hour forty five minutes, December 14, 1962. Johnny praises the Mayor for the great job he is doing. He and Mayor Robert Wagner discuss the forthcoming NY World's Fair, anticipating 70 million visitors, taxes, and the challenges dealing with the second largest budget in the USA. Abbe Lane already on the panel as Johnny Carson welcomes comedienne Henny Youngman, who praises Carson for the job he is doing...making guests feel comfortable when on the show. Henny jokes with Abbe Lane stating that he use to work with her husband Xavier Cugat. Hew tells Carson about his early career and how he use to deal with hecklers...some how use to wait outside after hours after him for cracks made during the show. Henny Youngman does his stand-up routine, after which the tape ends.

In this SPECICAL Rankin / Bass animated broadcast, comedians provide their own voices for their animated counterparts, except for Chico Marx and W. C. Fields, both deceased. Groucho Marx, 80 years old, was still playing himself. Voice actor Paul Frees narrated the show and filled in for those actors who were not able to do their own voices. The show included such segments as a Marx Brothers skit, which was a reworking of a scene from their Broadway play I'll Say She Is (1924). The skit included their famous Napoleon parody, with Napoleon played by Groucho. The sketch featured animated representations. Romeo Muller is credited as having written special material for the show in addition to the original scripts that came from the various comedians' sketches. This special and Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (released later that year) gave Rankin/Bass their highest TV ratings, even higher than Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964). The majority of the special is an animated vaudeville-style show featuring numerous comedians performing the greatest skits at the palace. Flip Wilson's "Columbus" sketch (with audio taken directly from his 1967 Atlantic Records album Cowboys and Colored People) is set to animation, as Queen Isabel Johnson sends Christopher Columbus to the New World to find, among other things, Ray Charles. Jack Benny and George Burns take a trip in Jack's infamous Maxwell, where Jack attempts to weasel his way out of paying an increased bridge toll (NOT COMPLETE). Groucho Marx recreates the Napoleon parody act from the Marx Brothers' 1925 Broadway revue I'll Say She Is, with Groucho reprising his role as Napoleon. (NOT COMPLETE). The W.C. Fields sketch is not included in this recording. The Smothers Brothers try their best to cooperate in singing a song to woo a princess, but their attempt does not go as planned. In between the skits, various comedians including Henny Youngman, Jack E. Leonard, George Jessel, and Phyllis Diller tell a few funny jokes as the TV special progresses. Cast Jack Benny . . . December 29th,1969-January 1st,1975 (ABC) Dick Cavett is back on television as ABC's new entrant in the late-night race. The format is desk and sofa five nights a week like the Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin shows. As Cavett sees it, it's the chemistry that counts. His forte: an articulate way with an interview, plus approaches to comedy that range from youthful innocence to the cynicism of W.C.Fields. Guests: Henny Youngman, Dr. Theodore Rubin, George Plimpton, and Bill Russell. David Steinberg is guest host standing in for Dick Cavett. We hear Steinberg's entire monologue. Comedian Henny Youngman does a stand-up routine, and relates about his early years in show business. He idolized Milton Berle. George Plimpton discusses his research interviewing comedians including Woody Allen with his own objective to attempt stand-up comedy on his own. He demonstrates his "act" to the audience. He states the most inventive and brilliant comedian of all is Jonathan Winters. The segment with Bill Russell runs 15 minutes. Russell is introduced by Steinberg. He is persuaded to take a raw shack test (first thing that comes to his mind) by Steinberg. Bill describes his feelings about Wilt Chamberlin and states why he was so great (in a comedic conclusion Bill mentions that Wilt was the second best player, ever). Russell talks about his initiative to be the first person to grow a beard as a player and how he got his reputation. Bill Russell and David Steinberg play one on one...Russell states his favorite shot a "dunk shot." In a brief appearance, Dr. Theodore Rubin discusses his book, "Forever Thin." He states the myths about fat people, and defines "obese psychology." NOTE: Television commercials included. NOTE: 15 SECOND SILENT GAP prior to David Steinberg's introduction of Dr. Theodore Rubin (track 29).
