OPEN END with David Susskind: (WNTA Channel 13 Television) "THE MOVIE MAKERS" Open End with David Susskind was a break through talk show which literally had no time limit. The show ended when host, moderator David Susskind felt all conversation points were discussed. Some of these marathon telecasts lasted over four hours!. The series premiered on WNTA Channel 13 in New York for three years, an independent broadcast station, before it would become a Public Broadcast Station in 1962. A myriad of talk show guests, famous, infamous and unknown, found a forum on OPEN END. Subjects varied focusing on usually one topic...show business, politics, the economy, sex, education, crime, etc. Typically, many guests would discuss a subject sitting around a large table with David Susskind moderating, leading his guests with baited questions. For the first three years, of its 26 year existence as a regular series, WNTA TV was home to OPEN END which originally began its broadcasts on Tuesday nights, switching on January 18, 1959 to Sunday nights...a future Sunday evening time slot of the week where it would remain until 1986, for the rest of its run. The OPEN END with David Susskind Show also found syndication across the country and each market would run the program at different time at their own discretion. Most all of the telecasts were recorded on video tape, 2" quadruplex. Most shows were kept for a year or two like THE MOVIE MAKERS broadcast which was re-run on August 6, 1961 almost a year after it was first telecast on October 2, 1960. By this time the show ran for a finite three hours long. Thus the re-run of the MOVIE MAKERS had some footage deleted from its original telecast which aired for over 3 hours & 30 minutes, 2 hours & 48 minutes sans commercials. The re-run of "THE MOVIE MAKERS" was the next to last broadcast telecast on WNTA channel 13. On September 10, 1961 the show moved to WNEW Channel 5 METROMEDIA in New York, and its air time was reduced to a two hour show. Sadly, most all of OPEN END broadcasts, later re titled THE DAVID SUSSKIND SHOW, commencing with the Oct. 2, 1966 broadcast, were wiped (erased), destroyed, discarded...whereabouts unknown, representing most shows produced and telecast during the late 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's. "THE MOVIE MAKERS" panel consisted of directors, Fred Zinnemann, Richard Brooks, George Cukor, writer / producer Jerry Wald and screen writer Daniel Taradash. The round table discussion is lively and continued for almost three hours, sans commercials, many topics and anecdotal stories are exchanged. Discussion related to critics, the picture making business of today and yesterday, technical financial challenges of the day, budgets, the independent film making movement, working methods, the motion picture code, the black list, stars of tomorrow, new wave cinema, and commentary related to Hollywood legends, past and present, including D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, Jerry Lewis, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, and so many others. One unexpected highlight on this show is the inclusion of actress Greer Garson who can be heard in the studio, and at one point comes to the round-table and serves sandwiches to the panel, where Susskind and the panel start to inject their own humor related to this gesture. NOTE: This broadcast was discovered by archivist / scholar, Gary Rutowski (www.savetv.tv) in the form of six two sided 10" acetate discs. Eleven sides were cut. Each side plays for approximately 15 minutes. The discs were recorded by Soundcraft, at the request of guest panelist, Daniel Taradash, who paid for this service. Soundcraft was a duplication company with headquarters located in New York City at the time. The acetates were recorded at 33 &1/3rpm. Phil Gries cleaned, restored and digitized the acetates in December of 2018. The ten hour process required some equalization, slight volume adjustments, elimination of occasional unwanted extraneous recorded content, occasional moderate unwanted electronic "noise," host David Susskind lead ins to commercial breaks (ten) and four additional edits eliminating gaps, clicks, and chatter. Thus, segues from one disc side to another, eleven in all, were created producing a listening flow as a complete program which never goes to commercial. This rare example of a very early OPEN END with David Susskind broadcast is an historic and important television audio air check, now archived and preserved in digital form, reprocessed with continuity by Phil Gries (all extraneous audio eliminated), for the first time in six decades. It is considered one of the oldest surviving OPEN END complete broadcasts, extant.

For four years and eight months, Jack Paar reigned supreme as host of the Tonight Show with a crew of regulars, but only two stayed with him for the entire run; announcer Hugh Downs and band leader Jose Melies, a former army buddy. Familiar faces who appeared many times with Jack included Dody Goodman, Betty Johnson, Elsa Maxwell, Alexander King, Genevieve, Jack Douglas; and wife Reiko, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Hans Conried, Peggy Cass, Cliff (Charley Weaver) Arquette, and Johnathan Winters. Hugh Downs substituted for Jack Paar 79 times, more than any other substitute host there were 20 different performers over the period of the series run. Joey Bishop substituted for Paar 31 times. Arlene Francis, 30 times, Jonathan Winters, 26 times, Orson Bean, 21 times, and Johnny Carson 15 times. Altogether there were 243 broadcasts that had substitute hosts filling in for Paar during Jack Paar's TONIGHT SHOW tenure. The title of the late-night broadcast changed to THE JACK PAAR SHOW which took effect on February 3, 1958. The first videotaped broadcast aired on January 5, 1959. "Best of Paar " Re-runs began on July 10, 1959. The first color broadcast aired on September 19, news bulletin on the "Explorer I" satellite, launched today. Jack's guest is Jonathan Winters, Arlene Francis, George Kirgo all join in a forum of round table discussion topics including the discovery of the wheel, outer space civilizations, the inevitability of war, and the intellect of friend Alexander King. Jack Paar mentions that during last evenings show Victor Borge told a joke about a plane crash that was not know by anyone until the 11 O'clock News. Paar says that he against that type of subject as humor. During this exchange of philosophical thinking Jack Paar, Jonathan Winters, Hugh Downs, Arlene Francis and George Kirby discuss the subject of "During the History of the World, War is Inevitable." Jonathan Winters describes his imaginary symbolic character "The Man with the Glass Head."

NOTE: David Susskind's show, Open End, was so titled because the show's episode ran as long as needed to cover the topic. In mid October, 1960, Susskind invited Nikita Khrushchev to appear for an interview. Khrushchev was prepared to expose any hypocrisy and propaganda, and the usually unbeatable Susskind had met his match. For 2 hours, Khrushchev pummeled Susskind's anti-Russian and anti-Castro's rants, embarrassing Susskind and the nation. It was even more unfortunate when a anti-communism commercial ran mid-way through the live event. Khrushchev, realizing what had just happened, commented about the "trickery." Susskind delivered long patriotic orations and attempted to appear statesman-like, but Khrushchev exposed Susskind's flip behavior. When Susskind remarked to Khrushchev, "You are baying at the moon", Khrushchev, according to Time Magazine, "gave him a naughty-boy dressing down, beginning by asking Susskind's age (39) and suggesting he had much to learn." In the fall of 1950, Como shifted to CBS where he hosted his own show for the next five seasons; the fifteen-minute program was seen Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, following the network news. Also featured were the Mitchell Ayres Orchestra and The Fontane Sisters, together with announcer Frank Gallop. In the fall of 1955 Como returned to NBC, where he hosted a weekly hour show for the next eight years; from 1955 to 1959 it was seen Saturdays and was titled The Perry Como Show. From 1959 to 1963 it was seen on Wednesdays and was titled The Kraft Music Hall. The Mitchell Ayres Orchestra and Frank Gallop were again featured, along with The Ray Charles Singers and The Louis DaPron Dancers (later, The Peter Gennaro Dancers). On Friday, December 16, 1960 at 10:36 am a plane collided with another plane a mile high in the New York sky. It was the first commercial air disaster o the jet age, killing all 127 passengers, and crew members and five more people on the ground, when one of the airliners crashed in Brooklyn, setting off a seven-alarm fire. It was the worst aviation disaster in American history. The TWA constellation out of Dayton, Ohio, and bound for La Guardia Airport, broke apart in midair and plummeted into an open field in Staten Island. A United Airlines DC-8 jet out of Chicago, bound for Idlewild Airport, now Kennedy Airport, caught fire and hurtled into Brooklyn at an initial rate of 733 feet per second. The plane sliced through a church, an funeral home and 10 brownstones before sliding to a stop on Seventh Avenue and Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn. Investigators ultimately determined United 826 had gone too late into its holding pattern and neither its crew or air traffic control knew exactly where it was. The only survivor was an 11-year old boy on the United jet who was thrown clear of the wreck and landed in a snowbank. The TWA jet crashed 11 miles to the southeast, on Staten Island. The accident was the world's deadliest aviation disaster at the time, and remains the deadliest accident in the history of United Airlines. The accident became known as the Park Slope plane crash or the Miller Field crash after the two crash sites. The accident was also the first hull loss and first fatal accident involving a Douglas DC-8. United Airlines Flight 826, Mainliner Will Rogers, registration N8013U, was a DC-8-11 carrying 77 passengers and seven crewmembers from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago to Idlewild Airport (now John F. Kennedy International Airport) in Queens. The crew consisted of Captain Robert Sawyer (age 46), First Officer Robert Fiebing (40), Flight Engineer Richard Pruitt (30) and four stewardesses: Mary Mahoney, Augustine Ferrar, Anne Bouthen, and Patricia Keller. Captain Sawyer was a highly experienced pilot, having accumulated 19,100 flight hours, of which 344 were in the DC-8. First Officer Fiebing had accumulated 8,400 flight hours, of which 416 were in the DC-8. Flight Engineer Pruitt had accumulated 8,500 flight hours, of which 379 were in the DC-8. Trans World Airlines Flight 266, Star of Sicily, registration N6907C,[7] was a Super Constellation carrying 39 passengers and five crew members from Dayton and Columbus, Ohio, to LaGuardia Airport in Queens. The crew consisted of Captain David Wollam (age 39), First Officer Dean Bowen (32), Flight Engineer LeRoy "Lee" Rosenthal (30) and two stewardesses, Margaret Gernat and Patricia Post. Captain Wollam had accumulated 14,583 flight hours, 267 of which were in the Constellation. First Officer Bowen had accumulated 6,411 flight hours, of which 268 were on the Constellation. Flight Engineer Rosenthal had accumulated 3,561 flight hours, of which 204 were in the Constellation. Star of Sicily's sister ship N6902C, Star of the Seine, was destroyed in another mid-air collision with a United Airlines flight in 1956. Background Flight paths of the two aircraft At 10:21 a.m. Eastern Time, United 826 advised ARINC radio that one of its VOR receivers was inoperative, and the message was relayed to United Airlines maintenance. However, air-traffic control (ATC) was not informed that the aircraft had only one operational receiver, which presented difficulty for the pilots of flight 826 to identify the Preston intersection, beyond which it had not received clearance. At 10:25 a.m., ATC issued a revised clearance for the flight to shorten its route to the Preston holding point (near Laurence Harbor, New Jersey) by 12 miles (19 km). That clearance included holding instructions (a standard "racetrack" holding pattern) for Flight 826 when it arrived at the Preston intersection. Flight 826 was expected to reduce its speed before reaching Preston to a standard holding speed of 210 knots (240 mph; 390 km/h) or lower. However, the aircraft was estimated to be traveling at 301 knots (346 mph; 557 km/h) when it collided with the TWA plane, several miles beyond the Preston clearance limit. During the investigation, United Airlines claimed that the Colts Neck VOR was unreliable. Preston was the point where airway V123—the 050-radial off the Robbinsville VOR—crossed the Solberg 120-degree radial and the Colts Neck 346-degree radial. However, the Civil Aeronautics Board's final report found no problem with the Colts Neck VOR. The prevailing conditions were light rain and fog, which had been preceded by snowfall. According to the DC-8's flight data recorder, the aircraft was 12 miles (19 km) off course, and for 81 seconds it descended at 3,600 feet per minute (18 m/s) while slowing from more than 400 knots (460 mph; 740 km/h) to 301 knots (346 mph; 557 km/h) at the time of the collision. One of the DC-8's starboard engines struck the Constellation just ahead of its wings, tearing apart a portion of the fuselage. The Constellation entered a dive, with debris continuing to fall as it disintegrated during its spiral to the ground. The initial impact tore the DC-8's engine from its pylon. Having lost one engine and a large part of the right wing, the DC-8 remained airborne for another 90 seconds. The DC-8 crashed into the Park Slope section of Brooklyn at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Sterling Place (40°40′38″N 73°58′25″W), scattering wreckage and setting fire to ten brownstone apartment buildings, the Pillar of Fire Church, the McCaddin Funeral Home, a Chinese laundry and a delicatessen. Six people on the ground were killed.[12][1] The crash left the remains of the DC-8 pointing southeast toward a large open field at Prospect Park, blocks from its crash site. An occupant in one of the affected apartment buildings said that his family survived because they were in the only room of their apartment that was not destroyed. The crash left a trench covering most of the length of the middle of Sterling Place. Witnesses thought that a bomb had detonated or that a building's boiler had exploded. The TWA plane crashed onto the northwest corner of Miller Field at 40.57°N 74.103°W, with some sections of the aircraft landing in New York Harbor. At least one passenger fell into a tree before the wreckage hit the ground. There was no radio contact with traffic controllers from either plane after the collision, although LaGuardia had begun tracking an incoming, fast-moving, unidentified plane from Preston toward the LaGuardia "Flatbush" outer marker. The likely cause of the accident was identified in a report by the US Civil Aeronautics Board: United Flight 826 proceeded beyond its clearance limit and the confines of the airspace allocated to the flight by Air Traffic Control. A contributing factor was the high speed of the United DC-8 as it approached the Preston intersection, coupled with the change of clearance which reduced the en-route distance along Victor 123 by approximately 11 miles (9.6 nmi; 18 km) Initial survivor The only person to initially survive the crash was Stephen Baltz, an 11-year-old boy from Wilmette, Illinois. He was traveling unaccompanied on Flight 826 to spend Christmas in Yonkers with relatives. He was thrown from the plane into a snowbank, where his burning clothing was extinguished. This broadcast depicts a chronicle of the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler, dictator of Germany. The story begins with scenes of Hitler as a shabby street-corner orator in Munich Germany. It shows his rise to a position of supreme power in his homeland and eventually in much of Europe. High Nazi officials are seen strutting about at the height of their success. Goering, Goebbels, Himmler and Hess are among the figures seen in addition to Adolph Hitler. Aside from newsreel shots of concentration camps there are reconstructed scenes of Nazi victims being prepared for extermination. There are scenes of mass Nazi rallies. As Nazi power begins to fail, there are scenes of Germans fleeing for shelter from "Allied bomb s. From a recent German movie comes re-enacted details of the abortive bomb lot against Hitler's life on July 20, 1944. Newsreels show Der Fuhrer being congratulated on his escape from death. But in fact his health is broken. While he broods in his bunker, Berlin falls in ruins above him. As the Russians advance on the doomed capitol Hitler takes his own life. An exceptional original music score is composed by Robert Russell Bennett to compliment and give impact to the visuals, and the narrative by Alexander Scourby is superb. He would continue to narrate over half of all Project XX events during its 16 year television cycle.

For four years and eight months Jack Paar reigned supreme as host of the Tonight Show with a crew of regulars, but only two stayed with him for the entire run; announcer Hugh Downs and band leader Jose Melies, a former army buddy. Familiar faces who appeared many times with Jack included Dody Goodman, Betty Johnson, Elsa Maxwell, Alexander King, Genevieve, Jack Douglas; and wife Reiko, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Hans Conried, Peggy Cass, Cliff (Charley Weaver) Arquette, and Johnathan Winters. Hugh Downs substituted for Jack Paar 79 times, more than any other substitute host there were 20 different performers over the period of the series run. Joey Bishop substituted for Paar 31 times. Arlene Francis, 30 times, Jonathan Winters, 26 times, Orson Bean, 21 times and Johnny Carson 15 times. Altogether there were 243 broadcasts that had substitute hosts filling in for Paar during Jack Paar's TONIGHT SHOW tenure. THE PLAY OF THE WEEK - Syndicated - 1959-1961 A New York-based dramatic anthology series that relied heavily on talent from Broadway, with occasional musical revues. Each Thursday night there was broadcast a staged different play covering all genres, dramas, comedies, musicals, fantasies, mysteries, etc. Underwritten by Standard Oil of New Jersey, the series' executive producer was David Susskind. NEW YORK SCRAPBOOK This was the second WNTA-TV review attempt for Play of the Week which presented two hours of song, dance and sketches about Manhattan and surrounding environs. Many bright moments in this program included "Demi Dozen" which had a solid run at Julius Monk's "Upstairs at the Downstairs" nitery. "Mr. Off-Broadway" is sung by lead Orson Bean. and "Ballad of the Lexington Ave. Express" is sung by Jane Connell. There is a song narrative about a corner preacher by Gerry Matthews. Kaye Ballard also belts out a few songs of her own, as well as singers Kenneth Nelson and Maureen Bailey. Julian Stein's orchestrations were for piano and from time to time, drums. September 26, 1960 - December 28, 1962 Dean Miller interviews veteran actor Charlie Ruggles. The only television interview Ruggles ever did aside from appearing on a This Is Your Life episode. Excerpt. Here's Hollywood (568 broadcasts) aired as a half-hour interview program, weekday afternoons on NBC at 4:30pm. On October 2, 1961 the show was reduced five minutes giving way to a live news broadcast with Sander Vanocur which aired at 4:55pm. Here's Hollywood was the leading daytime show for two years. It was the first TV broadcast of its kind, using two mobile vans equipped with 2" video tape equipment which traveled to the homes of celebrities...two locations each day, one star in the morning and one in the afternoon. Most of the interviews aired were ten minutes in length. Two different interviews comprised the full length of the half hour program. Occasionally, one subject would be interviewed for the complete program. Occasionally programs were produced outside of the United States...Hawaii, Germany, France. Five color broadcasts were attempted and then the concept abandoned, due to the complexity of 2" quadruplex video tape at the time. Dean Miller conducted interviews from September 26, 1960 to September 29, 1961. He was replaced by Jack Linkletter who conducted interviews from October 2, 1961 to December 28, 1962. Joanne Jordan conducted interviews from September 26, 1960 to June 9, 1961. She was replaced by Helen O'Oconnell who conducted interviews from June 13, 1961 to December 28, 1962. Note: Only a handful of the 1,100 different interviews survive. Most were erased, discarded, misplaced. NBC Archives have only two surviving kinescopes, one with Joe E. Brown (12-2-61), and one with Linda Darnell (12-4-61). UCLA Film & TV Archive has 46 different subject interview kinescopes on separate negative film and separate optical film. Archival Television Audio has 82 broadcasts on audio tape, originally recorded by Phil Gries at the time the broadcasts first aired. Most of them are complete interviews. These television Audio Air Checks represent the greatest number of known surviving HERE'S HOLLYWOOD broadcast episodes. UCLA FILM & Television Archives retains, in their vaults, the greatest number of individual original HERE'S HOLLYWOOD separate 16mm Kinescopes and coinciding separate optical and magnetic sound tracks, representing approximately four dozen shows. Almost ALL of these broadcasts remain in analog form, and not view-able as composite video and audio.

For the following 1956-1957 season, the Jackie Gleason Show returned to a live one-hour variety format with a Honeymooners sketch included in many of its broadcasts. After this season, The Honeymooners sketches would not be revived until the 1966-1967 season of The Jackie Gleason Show. Jackie Gleason criticizes and apologizes for his bad panel show, "You're In The Picture." He comments on the risks of theatrical productions. This show was canceled after its premiere episode.

1010 WINS RADIO New York switched from top forty to the first successful all-news station April 19, 1965. Previously when WINS was one of four premiere New York Rock 'N' Roll radio stations only a few snippets of on the half hour five minute Dick Waffle "Newswatch" broadcasts are known to exist. This rare audio was recorded by Phil Gries at 10:55 AM from his Brooklyn New York home on Saturday morning, February 4, 1961. Dick Waffle reports at the "Newswatch." Waffle reports initial bulletins reporting the blizzard of '61. This third "knockout" blizzard of the winter accounted for a 17 consecutive day of temperatures below freezing, the longest in New York history. We also hear the 1010 WINS sign off as the WINS announcer reports that the next news bulletins will be heard will be at 11:25 AM. NOTE: The Blizzard of February 3 - 4, 1961 The storm, U.S. HEAVIEST SNOW STORM SINCE 1947 tied up the Northeast coast. It occurred toward the end of an extended cold snowy period that brought the temperature in New York's Central Park down to -2 (2 degrees below zero) on the morning of February 2nd. The storm reached blizzard proportions throughout much of the northeast and winds at LaGuardia airport gusted over 80 miles per hour on the 4th. Snowfall totals exceeded 20 inches over much of the region. Falling on top existing snow cover, including that left over from the "Kennedy inaugural" snowstorm on the 19-20th of January, the aftermath of the storm found near record snow cover over the region ranging from 2 to 2 1/2 feet in and around New York City up to nearly 4 feet around Newburg, New York. Snow began falling on the evening of February 3rd 1961, dumping six inches and continued through the morning of the 4th, with an additional 11.4 inches of snow piling up. The snow that fell on February 4th was heavy and wet and was driven by gale force winds. This was the third major snowstorm of the winter, following 15.4 inches on December 11th and 12th 1960, and 9.9 inches of snow recorded on January 19th and 20th. However, those storms were characterized by very cold temperatures while this storm saw temperatures rise from the upper 20's to the mid 30's during the afternoon of the 4th when the snow changed to rain. This was the second winter in a row to have two snowstorms of one foot or more.

A salute to Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe on this Valentine's Day live presentation saluting the play "My Fair Lady." Hosts are Samuel Liff, stage production manager for the original Broadway production and conductor Franz Allers, who also performed during the Broadway "My Fair Lady" debut. Musical selections are played from the British and American productions. They include "I Could Have Danced All Night," sung by Julie Andrews, "The Rain in Spain," sung by Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison from the London Production, "With a Little Bit of Luck," sung by Stanley Holloway from the London Production, "The Ascop Gavotte," and "I've Grown Accustomed to her Face," sung by Rex Harrison. Anecdotes and recollections by Franz Allers and Samuel Liff reflect the many transitions experienced for this great classic as the company tours the world three years prior to the making of the motion picture in 1964. NOTE: The musical MY FAIR LADY had its pre-Broadway tryout at New Haven's Shubert Theatre. Then it played for four weeks at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, beginning on February 15, 1956. The musical premiered on Broadway March 15, 1956, at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York City. It transferred to the Broadhurst Theatre and then The Broadway Theatre, where it closed on September 29, 1962, after 2,717 performances, a record at the time. Moss Hart directed and Hanya Holm was choreographer. In addition to stars Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews and Stanley Holloway, the original cast included Robert Coote, Cathleen Nesbitt, John Michael King, and Reid Shelton. Harrison was replaced by Edward Mulhare in November 1957 and Sally Ann Howes replaced Andrews in February 1958. By the start of 1959, it was the biggest grossing Broadway show of all-time with a gross of $10 million. The Original Cast Recording, released on April 2, 1956, was the best-selling album in the United States in 1956. Original London production The West End production, in which Harrison, Andrews, Coote, and Holloway reprised their roles, opened on April 30, 1958, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where it ran for five and a half years (2,281 performances). Edwardian musical comedy star Zena Dare made her last appearance in the musical as Mrs. Higgins. Leonard Weir played Freddy. Harrison left the London cast in March 1959, followed by Andrews in August 1959 and Holloway in October 1959. MY FAIR LADY won six 1957 TONY awards, including Best Musical, and the Film version released in 1964 with Audrey Hepburn replacing Julie Andrews in the role of Eliza Doolittle won five Oscar awards including Best Actor for Rex Harrison and Best Picture.
